PD ISO/IEC Guide 73:2002 aims to provide basic and generic definitions for vocabulary associated with risk management, in order to develop common understanding amongst organizations across countries. The aim of this guide is to promote a coherent approach to the description of risk management activities and the use of risk management terminology.

This guide is generic and is compiled to encompass the general field of risk management. It includes basic terms, terms related to people or organizations affected by risk, terms related to risk assessment, and terms related to risk treatment and control.

In the safety field, risk management is focused on prevention and mitigation of harm. ISO/IEC Guide 51 should be used for safety aspects.
