The Business Excellence Model (BEM) is a general model of the various components and activities an organization needs to address if it is to be able to improve its overall quality and operational performance. It provides a means of self-assessment and an agenda for future action, but it goes beyond this. By adopting the BEM, organizations can go beyond the initial point of self-assessment because it provides the basis for written formal submissions to the annual UK and European Quality Awards. The BEM is at the heart of the work of the British Quality Foundation, which now has over 1,500 members in all sectors of UK industry.
