Despite its current fashionability, the idea of flexible work is not new and covers overtime, shift-work, temping and freelancing as well as newer forms of employment. Contracting has long been a vital aspect of computing, and facilities management and outsourcing, if not exactly invented by the IT industry, have certainly reached their ultimate expression within it. Now flexible work is seen as a new approach to human resources management (HRM).
