Data warehousing and associated technologies were developed to help businesses determine patterns in large volumes of data and so improve the track record of typically hit-and-miss management planning and decision-making. The original aim of data warehousing, as spelt out by the man who coined the term, Bill Inmon, was to bring together the two fundamentally different types of IT application within an enterprise - the automation of routine activities and the generation of management information - so that accurate, complete, and timely operational data might be used within the systems and processes of decision support. In this respect, data warehousing is at one end of an MIS continuum which starts with simple reporting and ranges through to the subject of this Guideline, analytically driven closed-loop feedback systems.
