Application Servers on NCC Guidelines 242

* Electronic copy only (pdf)

NCC Members have free access to this Guideline on the Principia website.

The current fashion for application servers is evidence of the increasing importance of intranets or Internet-based networks within many organizations. According to a recent report from market researchers, Ovum, 'application server technology will be key to the evolution of application architectures', which may sound like a tautology but is meant to suggest that a major change is taking place in the way organizations are rolling out their business applications. In fact, the 1999 NCC Survey of IT Users discovered that the web and intranets were 'the highest ranked growth areas of all of the technologies listed in the survey'. About half of respondents reported some use of intranets now, but nine out of ten said they were likely to be using them within two years - higher than any technology but the web itself.
