The business environment and the pace and direction of development in IT produces a demand for adaptivity among IS staff and flexibility within the IS department. As new technologies emerge or market conditions change, so the IS department must bend to meet the challenge. But a readiness to change at the drop of a hat may turn out to be less valuable than an ability to perceive patterns over an extended period and weigh longer-term consequences. In other words, responsiveness to rapid and frequent change may overvalue short-term skills at the expense of genuine expertise.
