Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) have been around for a number of years in the conventional form of 'logically partitioned' voice or data networks managed by traditional network operators. A decade ago, the term 'VPN' would typically have been used to refer to a corporate telecommunications network operating on the physical infrastructure supplied by a telco. This would give the appearance of privacy without the expense or effort of implementing a private network infrastructure.
