The market for first-time Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementations is predicted to decline this year as users move away from the idea of expensive all-purpose solutions towards a more precisely focused attack on enterprise management. As we said in '13 Themes for 2000', 'There can be little doubt 'one-stop' approaches to . . . ERP and even data warehousing have had their day. Flavour of the month (and of the months to come) is 'componentisation' - in a sense, just a fancy word to recognise the truth that big software needs to be customised and broken down into useful parts relevant to the precise needs of business units, departments or divisions.'
