The development of wireless and mobile computing has been hampered by inadequate technology and a lack of standards (or, perhaps we should say an excess of them). Today, things are beginning to change. In theory, wireless systems are eminently sensible and convenient - offering physical flexibility and rapid reconfigurability. Wireless also supplies the traditional model of broadband communications, so it is hardly surprising that much hype surrounds developments in this area. In practice, the bandwidth achievable with wire line and optical fibre is significantly greater than wireless offers - and it is in the nature of wireless communications that increased bandwidth demands higher frequencies and higher frequencies demand relatively costly (and often obtrusive) antenna technology to provide an effective infrastructure.
