Migrating to Open Source - Part II: The Business Evaluation
Guidelines 271NCC Members have free access to this Guideline on the Principia website.
The previous discussion in Part 1 (270) of this set of Open Source Guidelines focused on the components to consider in Migrating to Open Source, providing a framework for mapping these components onto your own organisational requirements. Part 2 looks at the detailed evaluation of requirements when migrating from a proprietary infrastructure to Open Source. The starting point is to consider the possibility of using Open Source product but only if its adoption will enable you to meet business requirements at a number of levels:
- whether integration or adoption can be achieved economically;
- whether OS will provide an enhanced business model, and;
- whether this transition can be achieved within an acceptable level of risk to the business.
