Legal Issues in Offshore Outsourcing

Offshore outsourcing (or 'offshoring') is becoming increasingly popular. The major player here, of course, is India, in particular in relation to call centres and IT. India is facing competition from other countries such as the Philippines, Ireland, China, Hungary and Canada which are entering the market and providing attractive alternatives to any UK companies which are considering outsourcing their functions. The business rationale includes:
- Cost savings - call centre staff starting salaries in the UK are around £11,000, in India they are around £2,500
- Access to a skilled and motivated workforce which may not be available onshore
- Less regulation
- Time zone advantages
- Government incentives
