A virtual private network (VPN) uses public network nodes, like the Internet, to transport data. Encryption and other security measures ensure that only authorized users can access the network and that the data cannot be intercepted. A mobile virtual private network is one that allows users of mobile devices like Palm Pilots or cell phones to access the network, and the services it offers. Mobile VPNs will enable the wireless workforce by giving them secure access to data on the corporate network while in the field. By some estimates, in 2003 there will be over 500 subscribers on 3G wireless/mobile data networks.
