The company appraisal is an essential part of the strategy process and is generally recommended as the first step in strategic planning. No book since Drucker Managing for Results (1964) covers the topic as a whole, although some focus on one approach (Hamel and Pralahad: Core Competencies). However, it is a subject which, although critical, is somewhat neglected in the literature. The appraisal of the company covers the assessment of strengths, weaknesses, capabilities, resources and vulnerabilities. Building from a sound basis of theory, the book aims to be practical and to give guidance to senior managers and others involved in the strategy process. It is thus a book primarily aimed at managers, but should also be useful for MBA students undertaking strategy assignments.
