Overview The ISEB Practitioner Certificate in Software Testing is recognised as the essential measurement to prove knowledge of the principles and practice of planning and controlling testing projects. The course provides a framework to enable the successful management and implementation of complex IT projects to be undertaken. We have split the Practitioner Certificate into two weeks - Week 1 includes Test Process; Test Management; Risk Reviews; Incident Management; Test Process Improvement and People Skills.

Pre-requisites The entry criteria for candidates attending the ISEB Practitioner Certificate in Software Testing are:

  • Hold the ISEB Foundation Certificate in Software Testing, or
  • Have at least 18 months experience in software testing
Course Objectives On completion of Week 1, delegates will:
  • Understand different strategies for the testing of both complete life cycle and individual phases
  • Understand and plan the testing activities needed at any level from Component Testing to User Acceptance Testing and document them in compliance with IEEE Std. 829-1998
  • Be able to analyse risks and use the results to prioritise testing
  • Be able to run tests using defined test procedures
  • Be able to participate in reviews and inspections
  • Be able to assess testing and development activities for possible improvement
On completion of Week 2, delegates will:
  • Be able to perform various functional and structural testing techniques
  • Understand various types of non-functional testingtechniques
  • Understand the benefits of dynamic analysis and static analysis
  • Understand various non-systematic testing techniques
  • Be able to select appropriate test techniques
  • Be able to select and implement tools to support testing activities

  • Introduction Review of the Foundation Certificate syllabus;testing in the life cycle.
  • Test Process Generic test process; test planning; test specification; test execution; test checking and recording; checking for test completion.
  • Test Management Test management documentation; test plan documentation; test estimation; scheduling and test planning; test process monitoring and control.
  • Testing & Risk Introduction to testing and risk;risk management.
  • Reviews Introduction to reviews; the principles of reviews; informal review; walkthrough;technical review; inspection.
  • Incident Management IEEE Std. 1044-1993 Standards Classificationfor Software Anomalies.
  • Test ProcessImprovement Improving the development and testing process; CMMI; SPICE; TMM.
  • People Skills Individual skills; test team dynamics;fitting testing within an organisation; motivation.
Week 2
  • Test Techniques Functional / structural testing techniques; non-functional testing techniques; dynamic analysis; static analysis; non-systematic testing techniques; choosing test techniques.
  • Test Tools Overview; tool selection; tool implementation.
  • ISEB Examination Please note that the ISEB Practitioner Certificate examination is not part of the course. The examination can be booked at the same time as the course and has a separate charge.
