Professionalism Programme Best Practice Guide: Part 5 - Effective Purchasing & Supply
Best Practice Guide
Product Information
During 2006/7 the National Computing Centre launched the IS Professionalism Programme - a programme which aimed to recast IS as the key enabler of business transformation. A number of objectives were set during a series of 10 workshops. The outputs of each workshop have been synthesised into a Best Practice Guide by Bob Jarvis, an IS/IT veteran with over 40 years experience.
This Best Practice Guide is the output of the fifth IS Professionalism workshop which aimed to identify 'win-win' strategies for getting the right solution to meet the right problem, delivered by the right team and with the right contract.
Most, if not all, IS/IT departments are dependent to a large extent upon the suppliers who provide their infrastructure, basic technology, software and manpower. Most programmes and projects have vital content that has to be acquired externally and many project delays, or even failures, result from ineffective management of the supply chain. This is often caused by imprecise specification of requirements or simple poor communication.
Our guidance is not just about getting suppliers to deliver, it is more about understanding and interpreting business needs as technology solutions and managing the procurement and implementation process.
